Yo me sentaba junto a mi Crisantemo, y a mi tío Brian.

Men of Mars

Chapter One: What we’re dealing with…
No man would of thought that more than 56,000,000 kilometres away, men and women alike were being watched, observing our daily routine by life forms far more intelligent than them. Our emotions, our relationships. These are just the few things that were exposed to outer life. Life which was not welcome to earth, yet arrived without an invitation.
The planet Mars, I need not remind the reader, revolves around the sun at a mean distance of 140,000,000 miles, and the light and heat it receives from the sun is that of half in which the earth receives. Therefore, these results show that Mars must be older than the earth. Mars also holds that of which is necessary to hold life, air and water. Yet the people of our planet, up until the early 20th century, chose not to believe that by any chance life could exist on this planet which was scarcely one seventh of the volume of the earth.
It also did not occur to people of earth that if there was the slightest chance in which life could exist on this overgrown planet, that it would be far more intelligent than us. These Martians could be a more evolved species in which we could ever imagine. As we see monkeys and lemurs today, they may see us in the same context.
And now, today, we know that unknown species shouldn’t be underestimated. Now we know that Martians do exist. Now we know, that we weren’t ready for what was to come.

Chapter Two : Unidentified ’Falling’ Object
Then came the night of the first falling star. News reporters claimed that it was first seen ninety or one hundred miles north of us. They claimed it just to be a rare sighting of a shooting star, but people formed rumours that it was much too large to be a shooting star. We in the small town of Epping couldn’t imagine of what was to come.
I was at home at that hour in which it was first spotted, writing in my office; and although my windows face towards London and the blind was up (for I loved those days in which I would look up on the night sky), I saw nothing of this shooting star. Yet the strangest thing that had ever of dropped to earth from outer space, visible to me if I had only looked up as it passed my window. Some of the people in town who saw the star said it travelled with a hissing sound. I did not hear this.
But very early in the morning the poor Oliver Headgrove, who had seen the shooting star and had been persuaded that it lay between Stevenage and Chelmsford, rose early with the idea of finding it. And so he found it, soon after dawn. An enormous hole had been produced from where the gigantic object had hit the ground with such force.
Oliver approached it. He grew weary of how suspicious this situation was. An object so large it was able to puncher the earths surface of a diameter larger of that of a football pitch, slung from the boundaries of space with no clue to what this thing could be. Yet he gradually walked towards it, for the curiosity of what the thing is, was much greater than his aware for safety in this situation.
The thing itself lay almost entirely buried in rubble and dirt brought up from the surface from the impact. Although Oliver made his approach, he had to stay a certain distance away from the thing, as it was releasing waves of heat energy so powerful, for him to get any closer would cause his skin to burn.
He could see the object clearly now, and it was not what he expected in any way. It was a metallic-like spherical object. Oliver pushed up his glasses, and tried to register this information, for it was quite hard to imagine a man made object being brought from space. He walked slowly towards the unknown object, wondering what it could be. Thoughts racing through his mind, could it be an airplane? Or a space ship? Whatever it was, Oliver was determined to find out.
Until suddenly, a flash of light was shone into his face, revealing his shocked expression. He knew not what to do, but run. He ran and ran till his veins pumped battery acid. He ran at least a mile, and then he took a minute to catch his breath. He glanced back, to see a beam of light shining from the ground to the clouds. The beam of light had been from where he found the unknown object. Oliver, although being absolutely stunned by what he was seeing, carried on running. He ran until he reached the door of my house.
I heard him knocking franticly, screaming for me to open the door. I opened it to find an exhausted Oliver Headgrove at my door. He pushed me out of the way, and staggered to the sink. He threw water into his face to cool himself down. His shoes were covered in dirt, and was obvious he had been through the countryside.
“Did you see the falling star last night?” He said to me, still with water dripping from his face.
“I saw it on the news, what of it?” I replied in complete be wilderness. He began washing his face again. “Well, what of it?”
“It’s at Stevenage now.”
“Good lord!” I said in excitement. “That’s good, a fallen meteorite.”
He looked back at me as if I was a complete idiot.
“It’s not a meteorite.” He grabbed my sleeve and dragged me into the middle of the road. A beaming light rose above the location of Stevenage. It shone so brightly, I would not of been surprised if you could see if from another country. No doubt that wasn’t a meteorite.
My whole street was out of their houses. Their eyes fixed on the beam of light. Children questioning their parents on why it was there. Unfortunately, they knew just as much as their parents did.
“Oliver, what is it?” I asked, sounding like there was a piece of gum lodged in my throat.
“If I knew, I would of told you ages ago.” He replied. “I may of activated it. I found it in Stevenage thinking that it may have been a crashed airplane, but I was wrong. It’s an artificial cylinder. Metallic I think. Not sure which metal. But one thing is for sure, it is not from here.”

Chapter Three : Jack in the box

Everyone began walking very quickly towards the beam. Some people excited, like a family walking into a theme park, waiting to go on the first attraction. Others not too sure whether they should be walking towards this thing. A gigantic shining light, beaming out of the ground isn’t exactly inconspicuous.
I was a worrisome person, and all that kept going through my mind was those movies that I used to watch when I was a child. War of the Worlds, Close Encounters of the Third Kind or even ET. Was life from another planet possible of reaching us? Was I really considering that life from another planet had come to earth? Was I going crazy?
We arrived at the spot where the unknown object landed. Crowds of people gathered, and I am not exaggerating if I said at least 500 people were here to see what this mysterious light was. People started edging closer and closer to towards the unknown object. The pit in which the object collided with was swamped with people.
Disaster struck. A man, decided that it would be alright to touch the object. Oh how he was wrong. There was a sudden crunch, inside the object. The crowd fell silent.

Is Christof an incredible visionary – a genius – or an insane control freak?

Jim Carrey plays Truman Burbank in the mind-blowing film; The Truman Show. The Truman show is based on one man who for all his life has been put in a set for the entertainment of the world! All this is thanks to Christof who created the whole thing. He was the man who dreamed up this island in which Truman lives in today. Being called Christof gives a certain symbolism to the film. His name could be mistaken as Christ in that he built the world Truman lives in, so in one way he built Truman’s life just like Christ. Truman also has a symbolic name in that he is a True-man. Yet ironically, his life is completely false.

One would think of Christof as an incredible visionary for many reasons. For example, his ability to sculpt an idea in his mind and be determined enough to make it real. Some may think of him as quite a role model. Also his idea to add product placements within the show in order to gain extra money as I’m sure that everything in the Seahaven Island including wages for the actors would cost a lot of money, therefore he must of found many other ways to gain capital for the show. This could include such things as Truman products and Product Placement within the show.

Another reason why one would think of him as an incredible visionary is his dedication to the show. He lives in the moon of Seahaven, showing his addiction to Truman in that he has to keep as much surveillance over him as he can possibly have. Christof almost acts as if Truman was his own son. Some may find this quite a disturbing and worrying thing, others may find this quite admirable. Christof adopted Truman into the show, but as Christof has been keeping surveillance of Truman’s life, Christof soon enough comes to love Truman, not as just as a character as a TV show, but as a son. Only a man with a big heart can love a man like a son without even meeting them in person.

Some would also argue against him being an incredible visionary, and see him as quite a mad control freak. This is due to his desire to control every aspect of Truman’s life. One may find his addiction to Truman as quite a fatherly thing, in that he sees Truman as a son, but what father would encapsulate his son within an island when the son’s one dream is to become a explorer. Another point backing up this view is that Christof would do anything to stop Truman from leaving this man-made island. He’s even prepared to kill Truman just so that he would not reach the outside world. Many views have been cast into this situation. Some include the fact that Christof just doesn’t want Truman to go into the real world because he feels he will not be adapted to the life outside Seahaven, and he’s scared Truman will hurt himself or others will hurt him. Another view is that Christof feels that Truman must be truly determined in order to escape this artificial island, as he previously states in the movie;

“He could leave at any time. If his was more than just a vague ambition, if he was absolutely determined to discover the truth there’s no way to prevent him.”

This was after being criticized that he was put in a cell, and he should be let loose. This may be true, but then again, one may feel that conquering your fears of water and trying to sail to the other side of the world to Fiji is enough. Whatever way you look at it though, Christof is overly controlling in the way that he was prepared to kill Truman in order to keep the show going.

Another reason in why people may find Christof to be quite a control freak is his speech on how the world in which we live in is a ‘sick’ place. He also says that Seahaven is the way the world should be. Christof himself is living in the real world, in that he has created a show for the viewing public to gaze upon. Some may find his statements are pretty much psychotic. One may feel that because he has made this world almost to be a game, and every actor is just a pawn in his disturbing chess game.

In conclusion, I feel no matter how much the viewing public find watching Truman as entertaining as they do, no man should be put in an artificial world in order to be exploited to the world. What right does Christof have to adopt a human being and publicize their feelings, thoughts, actions and LIFE without their permission? Many may compare this to such shows as Big Brother, but the difference is Truman Burbank has not had any agreement to give Christof the rights to his life. The discussion on whether he is an amazing visionary is irrelevant.

NOTES

If I am to build a wooden toy as a main project for my DT, I want it to be a fantastic one. Obviously to build such a house like this one is a very ambitious target, but I have taken certain points of the house and considered it for future plans, for example the roof. I like how the roof resembles a roof just like one in real life. Also I like how it’s not too elaborate in that there’s not too much detail on the inside. This could give a child the freedom to reassemble the furniture and if the rooms were detachable, how the house is designed! This is a great idea to keep in mind.

How I may develop this toy:

There are many ways in which I could develop this dolls house into my own idea. One I have been really looking into is how I could make it so that the rooms of the house can be customizable in that you could rearrange the rooms so that it could be your very own design. To do this, I think the best idea is to make it so the rooms click into place, almost like lego bricks, in order for it to be a simple and enjoyable experience for the child. Another way that could give the child more ability to customize the whole play house is the freedom to customize the furniture in the house itself. This would give the child endless fun having making their house full changed into what they want it to be. One more aspect to upgrade this dolls house is the way I could provide the child with different characters in which they can use to play with the house itself, and give the child the chance to rein act their own lifestyle for their own little people! Just like a dolls house should be.

Compare “My Last Duchess” and “Porphyria’s Lover” showing how Browning conveys the characters in these two dramatic monologues and how he builds up their evil and sinister ways.

These two dramatic monologues lend themselves to an exploration of psychology. In both the speaker reveals himself gradually to an unnamed audience. In both cases the narrators have committed the crime of murder. A menacing premise for the speech itself. It is the tone in which they reveal their misdemeanors, the circumstances surrounding their actions and their responses to their crimes that make these poems particularly chilling.

In My Last Duchess the protagonist giving the dramatic monologue is the Duke. He is presented in many ways throughout the poem, one being self centered. This is shown when he says such things as ‘I chose never to stoop’, meaning that he would never lower himself to her level, demeaning her and putting himself on a pedestal. He is also seen as quite egotistic in that he arranges her death just so that she couldn’t smile upon another man apart from those he revealed the painting to. It is stated that he had killed her when he informs the envoy count; “This grew; I gave commands: / then all smiles stopped together”. He is also shown as extremely possessive. This is seen in how he keeps referring to her as ‘my’ last duchess. This emphasizes his desire to control her as a possession and not see her as a human being.

In Porphyria’s lover, the narrator is Porphyria’s lover. We are not sure whether the narrator could be a man, or a woman, and is one of the secrets of the poem. He is more emotional and thoughtful than the Duke is in that he always thought of what Porphyria would have wanted first, even if they did kill her, he thought it was what she would have wanted. They wanted to preserve the moment in which they truly thought she loved him and that she wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. What is also different from the two characters is that the lover sees Porphyria on the same level of importance. Porphyria’s lover has a true ‘love’ hidden within, whereas in My Last Duchess, the woman is just seen as an object.

In My Last Duchess, the aim of the murder was to remove the source of jealousy for the Duke. It was calculated and well planned, making it cold and bitter. It was fueled out of the Duke’s egotistic personality as he did not think of her, he only thought of himself. Although the murder in general was still quite horrific, the purpose of the murder was to preserve a beautiful moment that one lover thought was the peak of their relationship. It was a crime of deep passion, not out of cold blooded murder.

The Duke’s motive was to obliterate his jealousy by killing the source of it, this being the Duchess. Since he did not have full control of his wife, he took it upon himself to decide that no-one else should have control of her life, including the Duchess herself. He complained about her being “too soon made glad, too easily impressed.” Porphyria’s lover is different. There are two men in a relationship with this woman. Porphyria’s lover felt as if they were sharing her, and that sometime ‘passion would prevail’ meaning that their passion wasn’t expressed often, or not very often.

In My Last Duchess, the Duke uses a short and informative tone. He also expresses quite a proud and hubristic feel to his speech. He seems polite at times, but I think that he is just trying to point out the snob in him. It’s as if he puts everyone below him. He sees himself as the best, and that killing his wife would be below his level, therefore he gets someone else to do it for him. Porphyria’s lover is different, in that the tone right from the start of the poem sets a very gloomy, stormy night. We are given the impression of a storm brewing, not just outside the cabin, but inside also. When Porphyria and her lover snuggle up, we get a really tensile atmosphere brewing. He shows a really possessive side to his personality, giving a really creepy and eerie feel right from the start.

In both poems, the silent listener doesn’t say anything, but we have a slight idea on who the silent listener is. In My Last Duchess, we are sure that the audience is the count’s envoy, but with Porphyria’s lover, we do not know for certain. Two theories believe that it’s either Porphyria’s dead body, or it could be him telling the story to a friend or confessional box.

In My Last Duchess, the setting is a historic house in the renaissance period. We are given the mere image of The Duke’s Last Duchess, which in one way, he now has control of. My interpretation of where they are is a long Victorian hallway where loads of art is hung upon the walls or shown on a mantel piece all the way down, but the painting of his Last Duchess is the only one with a curtain and a chair in front of it. It’s the last one, and by far the most eye-catching. The setting of Porphyria’s lover is a lot different. I feel as if it gives a stormy atmosphere, not just outside the cabin, but also inside where we are given hints that tension is building, right from when the lover is upset that Porphyria was late, and she came inside really wet. We are told of a burning fireplace lighting up the room, revealing the two of them.

My Last Duchess’ form is written in rhyming pentameter lines. It uses enjambment which is where sentences and punctuation do not exist at the end of lines. The poem is a good example of a dramatic monologue where the protagonist reveals himself to an invisible audience. Porphyria’s lover has an odd rhyming pattern compared to the last Duchess, which could suggest the madness inside the lover. Browning also was the pathetic fallacy to describe the foul weather. In addition, like most of Browning’s poems, it is written as a dramatic monologue. However we are left to guess the invisible audience, perhaps the lover is trying to justify his doings and therefore is reciting what happened to himself, to justify what he has done.

I feel that overall Porphyria’s Lover is the better poem. I am more positive towards this dramatic monologue because I like the idea of the audience using their own imagination to reenact the composition in their minds. By this I mean that we are to guess who the audience is, and create our own setting in our minds. Also the way you can look at the murder, in that it can be seen from the love or just cold blooded murder.

How does a belief in the sanctity of life affect a Christian’s attitudes, behaviour, decision-making and lifestyle?

•February 12, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Christianity teaches that life is sacred. This is shown in the bible, in Corinthians 6:19, where it states; ‘Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit’. Therefore it would be against Christian teaching to take the life of another person, no matter the circumstance. It would also be disobeying the sixth commandment, which is ‘You shall not murder.’ It is clear that Christian’s feel that a human should not have the ability to choose when their life is to be ended. A Christian’s attitude might be in order to avoid losing the life of a baby to abortion, maybe the parent could give the child to adoption. A Christian could also seem not to show compassion to someone who wants an abortion as they may moralize.

A Christian could actively against abortions, for example the anti-abortion march which took place on the 27th October 2007. Activists met at the Houses of Parliament to call for a reduction in the upper time limit for abortion. This is just one example of when Christian’s take their views and their behavior escalates.

The sanctity of life may affect a Christian’s decision making in many ways. For example; if a Christian was giving advice to a woman considering an abortion, they may give her the bible’s teachings to try and help her decide whether she wishes to keep the baby or go ahead with the abortion. They may also give alternative options to the woman, such as adoption. Whatever happens, the Christian will try and show the woman that abortion is not the only way to get past the problem at hand. A Christian will always look at the matter from the bible’s point of view. They believe that the baby’s life is a gift from God, and is sacred, therefore it’s life must be kept throughout all circumstances.

The sanctity of life can change a Christian’s lifestyle. Seeing as most Christian’s feel that a baby must always be valued in someone’s life, they may choose to not have sex before feeling they are ready for a baby. Seeing as contraception is abandoned in a Christian’s beliefs, they must only have sexual intercourse when they are truly ready to devote their life to a child. A Christian must also put their child before any career or other responsibilities in their life, this could also affect their lifestyle in a big way, especially if the child is handicapped.

‘Christians should be allowed to believe what they want, but they shouldn’t try and inflict that on others’

In one way, Christians should be able to try and spread their religion and try to hint others towards Christianity. They should be able to do this because only then can they spread their religious views. Abortion is a good example in which Christians should be allowed to try and convince others that a woman should keep the baby as its life is precious. A Christian should have the right to free speech, and therefore they should have the right to state their views on certain topics.

However, there are some arguments to say that Christians should keep their opinions to their selves. Euthanasia is one topic in that some people believe that Christian’s views are irrelevant. Because of the sanctity of life, Christians believe that all life is precious, and that if a man or woman were to be voluntarily killed, it would be like destroying a gift from God. But, others think that the man or woman would be in pain, and would not want to be in that for the rest of his life. Therefore they feel the man should be put out of his misery. Another example of euthanasia is if someone is being held alive by a machine. Christians believe that their life should be kept for as long as possible, whereas someone else may feel that it’s their choice, and that the person should have the right to say whether they want to be kept alive by machine or not.

Some people feel forced to believe Christian’s beliefs due to the way some Christians act in order to get their opinion noticed. For example, Greenpeace (a Christian environmental activist group) have protested against things such as the Esso petrol distributer, as is which they spread a large poster across the esso offices in leatherhead.

My conclusion is that I believe that Christians have the right to state their views on a certain topic but they shouldn’t go to extremes to get their opinion noticed by the public. In order to show their judgments, they must state them in an orderly and appropriate manner.

Material:

Two main wood types are used in wooden toys. Either pine, or beech. Pines are among the most commercially important of tree species, valued for their timber and wood pulp throughout the world, but pine is not just used for wooden toys. Many pine species make attractive ornamental plantings for parks and larger gardens, with a variety of dwarf cultivars being suitable for smaller spaces. Pines are also commercially grown and harvested for Christmas trees. The beech most commonly grown as an ornamental tree is the European Beech (Fagus sylvatica), widely cultivated in North America as well as its native Europe. Beech has other uses also. Beech wood is excellent firewood, easily split and burning for many hours with bright but calm flames. Chips of beech wood are used in the brewing of Budweiser beer as a fining agent.

Age Groups:

Creating a toy, you must aim at your target audience thoroughly; as you want to make sure that your product sells well. For example, you don’t want a girl’s doll house with boy’s racing cars and action men in it, as it would confuse the target consumer.

Colour

Colour is a great way to appeal to children. Children often are attracted by a variety of colours in a toy. They often like bright, happy colours such as yellow, blue and red. Dark colours are usually associated with darker, scarier things.
